What is ping?

Ping is a network diagnostic utility; in everyday usage, “my ping” usually means the time for a request to reach a destination and a reply to return. It is measured in milliseconds (ms). A smaller round-trip time generally means a quicker response along that measured path, not a higher download speed.

Traditional ping commonly uses ICMP echo requests and replies. A browser speed test uses a different mechanism. Always check the method and destination before comparing two numbers.

What does ping mean in a YourSpeedCheck result?

YourSpeedCheck uses the Cloudflare speed-test library to measure browser HTTP request round-trip timing. The displayed latency summarizes samples to that test service. It is not an ICMP ping to your router, your game server or every destination on the internet.

The test schedules 12 idle-latency samples. Its preliminary response interpretation requires at least six usable idle samples; an interrupted or insufficient test should not be treated as a full assessment. Browser activity and the network path can influence the readings. See the measurement methodology for sampling and validation limits.

Ping vs latency vs bandwidth

Ping vs latency vs bandwidth
TermWhat it describes
Round-trip timeA request journey to a destination and back.
One-way latencyDelay in one direction; not necessarily half the round trip.
Bandwidth or throughputData capacity or measured transfer rate, usually expressed in Mbps here.
JitterVariation between delay measurements.

“Latency” can refer to one-way or round-trip delay depending on the tool. Network paths can be asymmetric, so dividing a round-trip result by two does not establish the actual one-way delay. More Mbps may shorten a large download without shortening the physical route to a distant server.

What is a good ping?

A good ping is low enough and stable enough for the application and destination you use. There is no single pass/fail boundary for all games, calls and websites. Compare the application’s own guidance and measurements to the relevant server, then consider variation and behavior during traffic.

For transparency, YourSpeedCheck’s preliminary responsiveness bands use latency boundaries of 40, 60, 100 and 180 ms. These are product interpretation thresholds, not certified network grades or universal service requirements. The final activity interpretation also depends on other metrics and sufficient samples. A result under a boundary does not guarantee that a particular game or call will work well.

What is a good ping for gaming?

Interactive play benefits from quick, consistent responses to the actual game server. Use the game’s own network display to compare server regions and watch for spikes. A cloud gaming stream has different bandwidth and responsiveness demands from a game rendered on your computer.

Do not assume a good speed-test ping predicts game-server ping: the destinations and routes differ. If a game is unresponsive despite fast downloads, follow why your ping is high rather than buying more Mbps solely to lower latency.

Why does ping matter for video calls?

Delay can make conversation awkward even when a call has enough bandwidth for video. Variable arrival times and missing data can also affect the experience. The conferencing app’s own call-health report is useful because it measures its actual connection.

Compare calls when your network is quiet and when backups or downloads are active. A large change under traffic deserves investigation, but it does not identify the responsible device or prove bufferbloat on its own.

What affects ping?

Distance, routing, queues, Wi-Fi conditions and VPN paths can all affect round-trip time. A nearby destination may still use an indirect route. Switching to Ethernet can remove a wireless variable, but cannot eliminate the travel time to a remote server.

Repeat comparisons under similar conditions. Avoid comparing one device over Wi-Fi at a busy time with a different device over Ethernet on a quiet morning and attributing every difference to the cable.

Ping vs jitter

A connection can have a moderate average delay that is consistent, or a low typical delay with frequent spikes. Those can feel different in real-time applications. What is jitter? explains how YourSpeedCheck summarizes changes between consecutive samples and what the summary can hide.

How can I test my ping, and what if it is high?

Run the internet speed test for a browser measurement to the test service. Read idle latency alongside loaded latency and sample coverage. For a specific game or call, also inspect that application’s diagnostics.

If the problem is already high ping or spikes, use the high-ping troubleshooting guide. For broad slow browsing or transfers, start with slow internet diagnosis. YourSpeedCheck is publicly available, but it is not a certified network diagnostic.
